Vinck & De Haro (2026): CLPW's algebraic framework is semiclassically but not perturbatively background-independent
Applying their own two-tier apparatus — "semiclassical" vs. "perturbative" background-independence — to the construction they set out to assess, Vinck & De Haro reach a mixed verdict: CLPW's crossed-product algebra, exactly as formulated in CLPW's original paper, satisfies the weaker notion (it works for any classical background in the strict G → 0 limit) but fails the stronger one. The reason given is constructive rather than principled: the algebra was built only in the strict semiclassical limit and does not incorporate backreaction between the observer and the gravitational field, so nothing in CLPW's construction has yet been shown to survive once small, finite-G corrections are switched on.
The verdict therefore does not settle whether CLPW's framework could be extended to the perturbative case — only that, as published, it has not been. The paper elsewhere notes (per Kolchmeyer and Liu, 2024, reported secondhand) that once backreaction is included the observer's worldline becomes subject to quantum uncertainty beyond the scrambling time, which could in principle change the algebra's type altogether rather than merely its background-independence status.
