A 2024 UN report calls an external attack a 'plausible' cause of Dag Hammarskjöld's 1961 death and 'almost certain' that Member States still withhold relevant archives

UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld died when his plane crashed near Ndola (then Northern Rhodesia) in September 1961; he was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously (see claim-nobel-no-posthumous-rule-broken-twice-before-1974). Sixty-three years on, the cause remains a formally open UN matter. A 2024 report by the appointed Eminent Person, Judge Mohamed Chande Othman, assesses it to "remain plausible that an external attack or threat was a cause of the crash," while reserving its strongest hedge for the disclosure gap: it is "almost certain" that "specific, crucial and so far undisclosed information exists in the archives of Member States."
