Hehl, McCrea, Mielke & Ne'eman's 1995 review already defines a hypermomentum current coupled to the affine connection — the mechanism the 2024 'hypermomentum challenge' turns on
F.W. Hehl, J.D. McCrea, E.W. Mielke and Y. Ne'eman's 1995 Physics Reports review of Metric-Affine Gauge Theory of Gravity (MAG) states, in its own abstract, that gauging the affine group canonically couples "energy–momentum and hypermomentum currents of matter... to the one-form basis and to the connection of a metric-affine spacetime," respectively — i.e. two independently-varied field-equation sectors (frame and connection) from the outset. Its Introduction confirms the hypermomentum current — spin current plus dilation current plus shear current — was defined specifically for this purpose: the authors "define, generalizing the spin current, a hypermomentum current that is coupled to the linear connection, i.e. to the new gravitational potential of spacetime," with the resulting field equations and Noether identities assigned to Chapter 5. Iosifidis & Hehl (2024) cite this paper as their reference [1] and open by crediting it with relating torsion and nonmetricity "to the microscopic properties of matter, such as the currents of spin, dilation, and shear."
This confirms the mechanism the 2024 priority claim turns on — hypermomentum sourcing an independently-varied connection sector — was already named and assigned to a specific chapter in 1995. It does not confirm that the 1995 authors themselves treated this sector as being in tension with anything resembling Geometric Trinity equivalence, a concept that did not exist until 2019: the actual field equations in Chapters 3-6, where that tension would have to show up, were not reached this session (arXiv's copy runs to only 6 pages; see question-verify-hypermomentum-challenge-1995-2024-priority-claim). "Latent" is consistent with what was found here — present in the formalism, not yet activated against a target that postdated it by decades — but not yet confirmed at the level of the actual derivation.
