Robert Merton's sociology of science reframes priority disputes — the sometimes-bitter fights over who discovered what first — as a predictable product of how science allocates reward, not a symptom of individual vanity. In his own words, the "concern of scientists to get there first and to establish their priority" is a "'normal' response to institutionalized values," because recognition functions as science's only currency: there is no other mechanism by which the community pays out credit for contributed work.
This reframing supplies a mechanism the vault's priority-and-misattribution notes have so far lacked. It explains why cases like Linnainmaa's uncredited priority or the self-exemplifying labels catalogued at claim-credit-detectors-are-themselves-misattributed keep recurring: if credit is the sole reward, contests over it are the system working as designed, not a defect in individual character.
