Robert K. Merton

Sociologist of science whose account of priority disputes — that they are not personal vanity but institutional norm-enforcement — is the theoretical backbone of the vault's entire credit/priority cluster. Self-exemplifying in the way the vault most enjoys: "multiple discovery" was itself multiply discovered, and the sociologists who study misattribution get misattributed. He connects the backprop-origins priority stories (Linnainmaa, Werbos, Amari) to a general law rather than a pile of anecdotes.
