The two disputes this vault tracks under "history repeating" are not structurally the same kind of fight. William Bell Wait's New York Point used a fundamentally different physical encoding from Louis Braille's cell: per Robert B. A reader trained on one system's tactile geometry could not simply relearn a convention to read the other; the physical shape itself differed.
The modern Nemeth/UEB dispute has no equivalent split. Per a 2019 NCEO brief authored by Frances Mary D'Andrea — a braille researcher who serves on BANA's board, writing under the University of Minnesota's National Center on Educational Outcomes, not in BANA's own name — both codes use the identical six-dot, 3x2 cell; they differ only in whether a number is encoded in the cell's upper four dots (UEB) or lower four dots (Nemeth). This is a convention choice within one already-standardized alphabet, not a competing script. Whether "splits along the same lines" is even the right frame to put the modern dispute in is itself unsettled.
