Patočka reportedly disliked the Plastic People of the Universe's music but signed Charter 77 after their 1976 trial anyway
Per Radio Prague International's 2007 retrospective, Jan Patočka personally disliked the music of the Plastic People of the Universe, the underground rock band whose 1976 obscenity trial Havel's own account identifies as the actual catalyst for Charter 77's founding climate — yet Patočka signed the declaration anyway after that trial.
The detail sharpens the vault's existing record of Charter 77's origins: the document's founding coalition was not built on shared aesthetic sympathy with the band that triggered it, but on a judgment, held even by someone who did not care for the music, that the prosecution itself crossed a line worth signing a declaration over.
