Jan Patočka
Czech phenomenologist (1907–1977) and one of Charter 77's three original spokesmen, alongside Václav Havel and Jiří Hájek, who died of a heart attack on 13 March 1977 — weeks after the declaration's publication — following lengthy interrogation by the StB, Czechoslovakia's secret police.
Matters to this vault as the co-spokesman whose death is widely treated as the first fatality attributed to the state's crackdown on Charter 77, and as the subject of Havel's own firsthand account of the last hours the two men spent together in StB custody.

Updates
- 2026-08-26: A named historian who edited the StB's own investigative file (Petr Blažek) dates the interrogation central to Patočka's death to 3 March 1977, ten days before the 13 March death date, and describes a post-1989 prosecution of two StB officers that was halted before trial. The same file documents a codenamed funeral-disruption operation, "Akce Dědek" (helicopter overflight, motorcycle noise), and that the priest who conducted the funeral was himself a paid StB informant. Separately, Patočka's son-in-law Jan Sokol and Dutch Foreign Minister Max van der Stoel each independently place a specific trigger before the fatal interrogation sequence — Patočka's 1 March 1977 meeting with van der Stoel — and Sokol, in a later interview, resists the flatter claim that the StB killed Patočka outright, calling it "an exaggeration."
