Pronskikh's rebuttal targets Graham & Dezhina's 'elite left first' account, but his own evidence for 'comparable ability' is aggregate, not an individual ability-outcome linkage

Pronskikh's paper directly names its target: "In the dominant account of the post-Soviet scientific exodus—developed most fully by Graham and Dezhina—the earliest émigrés were disproportionately the scientific elite," citing L. R. Graham and I. Dezhina, Science in the New Russia: Crisis, Aid, Reform (Indiana University Press, 2008). This sharpens claim-soviet-emigre-career-premium-was-structural-not-ability: the paper is not a general structural argument dropped into a vacuum, it is an explicit rebuttal of a named, existing scholarly account, held separately at claim-graham-dezhina-elite-left-first-unverified-against-primary-text.

The paper's own description of its evidentiary basis is aggregate and qualitative, not a matched individual-level dataset: "The evidence is of two kinds. For aggregate scale and timing we draw on bibliometric reconstructions... For the texture of careers we rely on named cases and institutional records, and, for the enclave mechanism... the author's own participant observation." The claim that "a scientist of the same calibre fared very differently according to the year in which he happened to arrive" is asserted structurally rather than demonstrated via a registry linking specific scientists' ability scores to specific outcomes. This is a methodological gap the abstract-only quotes on the sibling notes did not surface: the "hold ability constant, vary arrival year" framing is the paper's interpretive frame, not a description of an ability-linked dataset it actually built.
