Frank Rosenblatt, who built the perceptron, died in a Chesapeake Bay boating accident on his 43rd birthday
Frank Rosenblatt (1928–1971) built the perceptron, the first trainable artificial neural network and the machine embodiment of the connectionist thesis that learning is stored in distributed connection weights rather than in symbolic rules. Though the vault's perceptron cluster references him across roughly ten notes, none had characterized the man. He was a polymath — trained as a psychologist, engaged in music and liberal politics, and an amateur astronomer. He died on 11 July 1971, drowning in a boating accident in Chesapeake Bay while sailing his sloop Shearwater, on what was also his 43rd birthday. The Cornell Faculty Memorial records that he "died on Sunday afternoon, July 11, 1971, in a boating accident in Chesapeake Bay … He was born on July 11, 1928."
His perceptron work established the single-layer limits later scrutinized in claim-perceptrons-multilayer-sterile-was-conjecture.
