The neural-network research tradition — computation as learned weights across simple units — running from Rosenblatt's perceptron through the 1986 PDP revival to modern deep learning. The vault's load-bearing use is the myth-ledger question of the "connectionist winter": whether Minsky–Papert's Perceptrons (1969) actually killed the field or merely coincided with a funding drought (the sterility claim was a conjecture, and Widrow among others abandoned multilayer training for other reasons). It is also the tradition Dreyfus came to count as vindicating his critique of symbolic AI rather than falling to it.
