Joshua Solomon Soncino's 1483/84 printing of tractate Berakhot originated the Gemara-center/Rashi-inner/Tosafot-outer Talmud page layout, not Daniel Bomberg

The page layout every subsequent Babylonian Talmud edition has used — Gemara text centered on the page, Rashi's commentary running along the inner margin (toward the binding), Tosafot along the outer margin — was set by Joshua Solomon Soncino, in his 1483/84 printing of tractate Berakhot, the first dated printed tractate (Heller notes Iberian tractates "were contemporaneous to and may even have preceded the first Soncino imprints" — but those followed the Sephardic tradition, printed without Tosafot, and did not set the standard page). Marvin J. Heller, the primary historian of Hebrew Talmud printing, describes it directly: "The text, Rashi, and Tosafot are printed together on the same page, with the text in the middle of the page, Rashi on the inner margin towards the binding, and Tosafot along the outer margin of the page." He adds that "with rare exceptions, subsequent editions of the Talmud have adhered to the arrangement, selection of commentaries, and structure initiated by Joshua Solomon Soncino" — and states of Bomberg's later, far more famous editio princeps (Venice, 1519/20–23) that it was produced "utilizing the layout introduced by the Soncinos."

This corrects claim-bomberg-1520s-venice-talmud-set-standard-page-layout, which had (on Tier 3–4 sourcing) credited the layout itself to Bomberg. Bomberg's own, narrower, Tier 1-confirmed contribution was the standard pagination — see claim-later-talmud-printers-cited-bombergs-venice-pagination-by-name.

Why budding, not evergreen. The claim clears Tier 1 on a named scholar's own primary research, but it rests on one historian (Heller) without independent secondary corroboration read this session, and the vault has not yet located or read Heller's fuller monograph, Printing the Talmud (1992), where the claim is presumably developed at length.
