Daniel Bomberg

Antwerp-born Christian Hebraist (c. 1483–c. 1549) who ran the leading Hebrew print shop in Venice and, in 1519/20–23, printed the first complete Babylonian Talmud — the editio princeps — "with the approval of Pope Leo X." Matters to this vault as the anchor instance of its "unfamiliar name" hook (the standard Talmud pagination every later edition cites was fixed by a Catholic printer, not a rabbi) and as a case study in credit drift: the vault's own earlier note over-credited him with the page layout, which a 2026-07-27 Tier 1 check against Marvin J. Heller's primary scholarship corrected — Bomberg fixed the pagination, Joshua Solomon Soncino fixed the layout 36 years earlier.
