Charles Stein delayed publishing his admissibility theorem five years until he found a non-Bayesian proof, distrusting the Bayesian argument that explained his own result
Charles M. Stein (1920–2016) proved that the sample mean is inadmissible in three or more dimensions — the result underlying the James-Stein estimator. The cleanest explanation of why shrinkage works is Bayesian: pooling toward a common center is what an empirical-Bayes prior prescribes. Yet according to the IMS obituary, it "took him five years to publish" the admissibility theorem — "until he could find a non-Bayesian proof of the result" — because he was ideologically hostile to the framework that best explained it. The obituary attributes to him the view that "the Bayesian point of view is often accompanied by an insistence that people ought to agree to a certain doctrine, even without really knowing what that doctrine is."
Stein's nonconformity ran beyond mathematics: the same obituary records that he was a Vietnam War protester who "was even arrested for it." The capture's framing — that his politics and his statistics both ran against the consensus of their moment — folds the arrest in as biographical context rather than a separate finding.
The episode is a structural echo of Leslie Lamport's Paxos, where a landmark result was delayed years by its own author's or reviewers' discomfort with its form rather than its content. Here the friction was internal and ideological: the discoverer withheld a result whose most natural proof he refused to accept.
