Han van Meegeren escaped a Nazi-collaboration death sentence by proving, under court supervision, that his 'Vermeer' was his own forgery

Han van Meegeren was a Dutch painter who, during the German occupation of the Netherlands, sold a supposed Vermeer, Christ with the Adulteress, to Hermann Göring. When Allied investigators traced the painting back to him in 1945, he was arrested not for forgery but for collaboration — selling a Dutch national treasure to the enemy, a capital offense. To escape execution he inverted his own defense, admitting the work was a fake he had painted himself: "The painting in Göring's hands is not, as you assume, a Vermeer of Delft, but a Van Meegeren!" To make the confession credible he painted a fresh forgery, Jesus among the Doctors, under court and press supervision over the second half of 1945. He was ultimately convicted only of forgery, given a one-year sentence, and died of a heart attack in December 1947 before serving it.

The case is a rare instance where a defendant's interest ran toward proving his own guilt of a lesser crime to defeat a graver charge — a legal inversion that made the authentication question load-bearing in a criminal court rather than an art gallery.
