Zhu Kezhen's 1972 climate reconstruction was later adopted by China's climate skeptics for its independence from the West, not its scientific content

Zhu Kezhen (Coching Chu), the meteorologist regarded as the founder of modern Chinese climate science, published a reconstruction of roughly 5,000 years of Chinese temperature history in 1972, near the end of his career (Erik Baark, MPIWG Observations No. 9, 2023). Per Geoff Dembicki (Foreign Policy, 2017): "And though to most, Chu's work on cooling was a footnote at the end of his career, China's climate skeptics latched on — less for the particulars of his conclusions than for the fact that he'd reached them independently of the West." The adoption, decades after the work and after Chu's death, was about provenance — a Chinese scientist arriving at his own conclusions outside Western climatology — rather than a re-endorsement of the reconstruction's substance. The adoption-by-skeptics claim rests on Dembicki alone (Tier 3, [tier-3-single-source — needs corroboration]); the two sources also diverge on what the 1972 paper concluded — Baark has Zhu refuting the then-circulating "new ice age" hypothesis and noting a long-term warming trend, where Dembicki calls it "work on cooling."

This surfaced while testing whether Song Jian's cybernetics/population-modeling authority carried into China's later climate-skepticism politics; Dembicki's account covers that history in detail and does not name Song Jian at all — Zhu Kezhen is the figure that history actually credits. Per Baark, Zhu also briefed Mao Zedong alongside missile scientist Qian Xuesen and geologist Li Siguan in 1964, placing him in the same Cold War-era scientific establishment as the other figures in this capture's chain.
