Qian Xuesen

Chinese-American engineer (1911–2009), co-founder of Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a leading figure in early American rocketry, who was stripped of his security clearance and deported during the Red Scare in 1955 — after which he became the founding father of China's ballistic-missile and space program. In China, he went on to found the country's first cybernetics laboratory (1962) and, from the 1980s until his death, to serve as the state's most senior institutional advocate for qigong, traditional Chinese medicine, and "special human body functions" as legitimate scientific research.

Matters to this vault as the recruiter who trained Song Jian — the central figure of the vault's longest-running cybernetics-dating dispute — into cybernetics domestically in 1962, more than a decade before the European contacts (1975 Twente, 1978 Helsinki) the dispute has focused on; and, independently, as a striking case of a rigorous Cold War engineer becoming the institutional shield for pseudoscience later in the same career.
