Christian Welzel

Political scientist, co-creator with Ronald Inglehart of the Inglehart–Welzel cultural map — the two-dimensional (traditional/secular-rational; survival/self-expression) projection of World Values Survey responses — and author of Freedom Rising (2013), whose "secular values" and "emancipative values" indices operationalize the self-expression axis as a theory of human empowerment.

Daryani, Bogen & Daepp (2026) build their entire measurement apparatus on the Inglehart–Welzel map, and use Welzel's separate Freedom Rising indices as an independent operationalization check on their own reversal-classification method (reported as concordant on six of seven candidate reversal countries) — so Welzel's framework appears twice in the corroborating paper, once as the instrument and once as the check.
