Gabelsberger shorthand

A German stenography notation "in common use among German and Austrian academics in the early part of the twentieth century" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Largely illegible today: per FAU, "only very few people are able to read this writing, meaning that large quantities of archived material are virtually unaccessible." Load-bearing for this vault because several historically significant manuscripts survive only in it — most notably Kurt Gödel's private "Max Phil" philosophical notebooks — and because, as of a December 2025 HAVI grant, it is itself now an active AI-decipherment target (Christlein and Weichselbaumer's FAU/Mainz project). The system's own origin (invented 1817 by Franz Xaver Gabelsberger) is an unexplored lead, not yet researched in the vault.

• 2026-08-17: The "unexplored lead" above is now started. Franz Xaver Gabelsberger began the system in 1817 and published it in book form in 1834 (a Bavarian government clerk; the system spread to Scandinavia, the Slavic countries, and Italy before being superseded in 1924) — now its own entity page, entity-franz-xaver-gabelsberger. The same research pass found a genuine person-bridge to the vault's separate IPA-notation cluster: this system's own article names Pitman Shorthand as its point of mechanical contrast on vowel treatment, and Pitman Shorthand's inventor, Isaac Pitman, also co-created the English Phonotypic Alphabet that feeds the IPA.
