Isaac Pitman
English phonetic-shorthand inventor and spelling-reform advocate who first published his own shorthand system as the pamphlet Sound-Hand in 1837, then co-created the English Phonotypic Alphabet (EPA) with Alexander John Ellis around 1843–1845 as a parallel English spelling-reform project.
Matters to this vault as the person-bridge between two clusters that had otherwise never cited each other: Gabelsberger shorthand (Franz Xaver Gabelsberger's German stenography system, currently an AI-decipherment target for Kurt Gödel's Max Phil notebooks) and the Lepsius → Ellis → Sweet → IPA phonetic-notation lineage. Pitman's own shorthand is named directly in Gabelsberger's article as its point of mechanical contrast on vowel treatment, while his EPA collaboration with Ellis feeds straight into the IPA. One person, one decade, two branches of the same reform impulse that only merged in England, in him.

Updates
- 2026-08-26: Both grounding dates for this page now have primary-source confirmation rather than Wikipedia alone — Pitman's own Phonotypic Journal documents the EPA's June/July 1845 completion in his own editorial voice, and the University of Bath's Pitman Collection archive independently dates Sound-Hand's origin to September 1837 from a note in Pitman's own hand, naming Samuel Taylor's shorthand as the system it replaced. - 2026-09-01: Confirmed as the vault's
vault_bridgetrue-positive case, contrasted against A.A. Fel'dbaum's false-negative one — the tool flagged real embedding proximity between the Gabelsberger and IPA clusters before Pitman had any vault presence, then the hop chain supplied the mechanism. No new biographical fact. (observation-pitman-feldbaum-bridges-same-genre-opposite-tool-outcomes)
