Václav Havel

Czech playwright and dissident, principal drafter of Czechoslovakia's Charter 77 human-rights declaration (1977), later the last president of Czechoslovakia and first president of the Czech Republic.

Matters to this vault as the author, in his own words, of the account that Charter 77 — the document Charter 08 explicitly named itself after three decades later — arose not from a political dispute but from the 1976 trial of an underground rock band, the Plastic People of the Universe.
