Howard Schuman
Survey researcher (d. 2021) at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, where institutional biographies credit him with directing the Survey Research Center during the 1980s (Tier 4 pointers, not read closely this session — one such bio gives his birth year as 1925, another vault source consulted the same day gives 1928; the discrepancy is unresolved and neither figure is asserted here). Co-author, with Lowell L. Hargens, of "Citation Counts and Social Comparisons: Scientists' Use and Evaluation of Citation Index Data," Social Science Research 19(3) (September 1990): 205–221 — the study behind claim-cameron-2005-hargens-schuman-1990-citation-data-hiring-tenure-scope's 35%/60% department-survey figures, still unverified against the primary. His first name was recorded in this vault as "Herman" from 2026-08-09 until corrected to "Howard" on 2026-08-10, confirmed directly against Brian D. Cameron's own footnote 54.
