Eugene Garfield

Founder of the Institute for Scientific Information and the Science Citation Index, and the inventor of the journal impact factor — real, and load-bearing across two separate vault clusters. In the bibliometrics thread he is the metric's own inventor warning against its misuse (claim-garfield-warned-impact-factor-unfit-to-judge-individuals) whose institute was later sold into private-equity-owned Clarivate (claim-garfields-isi-became-private-equity-owned-clarivate). In the sociology-of-science thread he is a working historian of the field: his 1980 Current Contents essay "Multiple Independent Discovery & Creativity in Science" is a Tier 1 contemporaneous survey of the field's own standard figures, used here as negative evidence that Tertius Chandler's repackaging thesis sits outside the canonical citation network (claim-garfield-1980-survey-omits-chandler).
