Ian Fleming
British Naval Intelligence Division officer during the Second World War who went on to write the James Bond novels, drawing on his wartime service and colleagues for much of the fiction's texture.
He matters to this vault as the connecting figure where fiction and real tradecraft crossed inside NID's Room 39 — a deception device travelling fiction → memo → operation, and real officers travelling office → fiction: he served as personal assistant to John Godfrey (later fictionalized as "M"), co-produced the 1939 Trout Memo whose item 28 borrowed a deception device from Basil Thomson's detective fiction and was later executed for real as Operation Mincemeat, and fictionalized Ministry of Supply gadget-maker Charles Fraser-Smith into Bond's "Q." Previously known to the vault only as a one-mention aside inside Godfrey's own material, with no dedicated page.

- claim-fraser-smith-memoir-golf-ball-quote-unverified-primary — 2026-10-01: Fraser-Smith's own memoir reportedly records a specific complaint that Fleming's fictional golf balls were unrealistic — an unverified but strong lead toward primary confirmation of the borrowing.
Updates
- 2026-10-05: a third, independent source (the Croxley Green History Project, a Hertfordshire local-history site citing the Fraser-Smith memoir and David Porter's biography rather than Lycett or Harper) corroborates the Fraser-Smith/Q modeling claim from outside the vault's existing two chains — but says nothing about Fleming "misusing" the golf-ball idea or about Diamonds Are Forever by name (claim-croxley-green-corroborates-fraser-smith-golf-balls-and-q-identification).
- 2026-10-02 (propagation-repair): the golf-ball reference line above stated
the claim-note's pre-correction framing as current fact and was corrected in
place. Was: a Bond-specialist source "independently confirms" the 1956 novel
uses the device, "genuinely lifted from real WWII tradecraft." Now: that
source is Tier-3 evidence for the device, independent of History.com but
still a single root (
independent_roots: 1), and the WWII-tradecraft origin is stated as the specialist understanding rather than as established fact. The source attributes the technique to wartime naval intelligence generally, not to Fraser-Smith by name.
