John R. Anderson

American cognitive psychologist (Carnegie Mellon University) who originated rational analysis — explaining a piece of human cognition as the optimal solution to the computational problem the environment poses — and built ACT-R, one of the longest-running cognitive architectures in the field. He matters to this vault as the definitional anchor of the rational-analysis cluster: the program that Lieder & Griffiths' resource-rational analysis explicitly extends, that Oaksford & Chater's Wason-task reanalysis instantiates, and that sits opposite Gigerenzer's ecological rationality in the vault's optimization-vs-heuristics thread — yet despite fifteen-plus claim-notes citing his work, no hub page existed for him until this promotion surfaced the gap.

In his own 1991 Behavioral and Brain Sciences restatement of the 1990 program, Anderson defines rational analysis as behavior "optimized somehow to the structure of the environment," borrowed from the economic "rational man" hypothesis, and explicitly adopts Marr's (1982) computational-level terminology to describe where the program sits relative to mechanistic theory. He situates his own program inside an older lineage — Brunswik and Gibson, then Marr and Shepard — rather than presenting it as sui generis.
