John Dewey

American philosopher and psychologist (1859-1952), the central figure of American pragmatism and a longtime Columbia University professor, whose students went on to shape the 20th-century political foundings of two different countries he never governed and rarely wrote about directly.

Matters to this vault as the hub connecting two independently-surfaced threads: his former Columbia student Hu Shih hosted him in China for over two years (1919-1921) amid the May Fourth Movement and later co-founded the China Institute of America (1926) — already tracked here via Pierre Goodrich's later trusteeship — while another Columbia student, B.R. Ambedkar, carried Dewey's own definition of democracy into India's anti-caste constitutional founding. Neither connection was findable by this vault's cosine or link-graph tools; both run through a person, not a shared text.
