Jorge E. Hirsch

Condensed-matter physicist at UC San Diego who invented the h-index (2005), a single-number measure of a scientist's citation output, and who — in a separate, later episode in his own field of superconductivity theory — became the leading forensic critic of Ranga Dias's room-temperature superconductivity claims. His data-pattern analysis, later joined by Dirk van der Marel, helped force Nature's September 2022 retraction of the 2020 carbonaceous-sulfur-hydride paper. Matters to this vault as a genuine multi-thread node: the same "does the pattern of evidence make sense" instinct that produced a widely-adopted bibliometric tool later unmasked a fabricated dataset, and his own critique cost him an arXiv posting sanction even as it held up technically.
