Maurice Halbwachs

French philosopher and sociologist. His 1925 Les cadres sociaux de la mémoire ("The Social Frameworks of Memory") introduced the idea of collective memory: that individual remembering is reconstructed in the present through social frameworks, never a private, isolated recording. The vault treats him as the shared theoretical ancestor of two branches it otherwise keeps separate — Portelli's oral-history method and the interpretive wing of organizational-forgetting studies (Foroughi & Al-Amoudi) — with no lineage into the econometric organizational forgetting tradition (Argote/Benkard), which descends from production economics instead. Died in Buchenwald in 1945. First flagged as a saved "person-behind-the-thing" hook on 2026-07-09, held for a future chain until this one.
