Career Naval Intelligence Division veteran turned naval-intelligence historian, author of Very Special Admiral: The Life of Admiral J.H. Godfrey (Hamish Hamilton, 1980) — Godfrey's biographer — and of Godfrey's entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
