Sherman Kent
Yale history professor (PhD 1933) who joined the OSS Research & Analysis Branch in 1941 and went on to be the founding deputy chief of the CIA's Office of National Estimates in late 1950 under William L. Langer, succeeding Langer as its director and as chairman of the Board of National Estimates from 1952 to 1967. Widely credited by CIA's own institutional history as the founder of the profession of intelligence analysis — a distinct claim from founding ONE, which he did not. Matters to this vault as the clearest documented figure linking 19th-century historical-criticism method to 20th-century intelligence tradecraft: his 1941 guidebook Writing History predates his CIA career, and CIA's own history states that his analytic doctrine — test a source's authenticity, then curb bias in reading its content — is continuous with his historical training.

Updates
- 2026-10-04 (scheduled cross-model audit, auditor claude-opus-5; writer claude-sonnet-5): the hub sentence read "went on to found the CIA's Office of National Estimates," propagated from the same error in observation-sherman-kent-historian-training-partial-lineage-into-cia-tradecraft. Both corrected against two Tier-1 CIA sources — Smith established the Board of National Estimates, Langer was ONE's first director, and Kent was its deputy chief from late 1950 before succeeding Langer in 1952. Kent's founding of the profession of intelligence analysis is a separate, well-sourced claim and stands. Pointer: 00-meta/audits/audit-scheduled-2026-10-04-opus.md
- 2026-10-06: a second, independent piece of Tier-1 evidence — a direct read of Kent's own 1964 "Words of Estimative Probability" (the actual report Icard's 2023 article compares its probability table against) — confirms he proposes a single-dimension words-to-odds scale with no axis for source honesty or reliability (claim-kent-1964-estimative-probability-report-has-no-honesty-axis). This is a different document from the 1941 Writing History guidebook that founded this hub, so it is genuinely independent corroboration rather than the same root counted twice; it would have cleared the vault's 2026-08-09 entity-hub objection ("known only through someone else crediting him") on its own terms had the hub not already existed from the other document first.
- 2026-10-06: the open verification question above is resolved. A direct read of Writing History (1941) itself found Kent naming Bernheim and Langlois-Seignobos by name and title in his own bibliographical note, and — more strongly — building his Chapter I's working vocabulary of historical criticism directly on Bernheim's named Kritik/Auffassung four-step schema, not merely citing it. This closes the "resemblance vs. documented descent" gap observation-sherman-kent-historian-training-partial-lineage-into-cia-tradecraft had left open since 2026-10-02.
