Kent's Writing History (1941) names Bernheim and Langlois-Seignobos by name and title as the two founding systematizers of historical method
Kent's Writing History (1941) names Bernheim and Langlois-Seignobos by name and title
In the "Historical Method" section of his own bibliographical note (printed pp. 110-111 of the 1941 first edition, cited by his own footnote 2 on p. 6), Sherman Kent writes: "Nine years after Bernheim, C. V. Langlois and Charles Seignobos published their Introduction aux etudes historiques (Paris, 1898; trans. into English by G. G. Berry." Kent dates the two works relative to each other and notes the later English revised edition (London and N.Y., 1925). He treats the pairing as settled enough to use as a yardstick elsewhere in the same note: describing Fred M. Fling's Outline of Historical Method (1899), he writes that it "might almost be considered a brief paraphrase of Bemheim and Langlois and Seignobos."
This is Kent naming both Langlois and Seignobos's 1898 Introduction to the Study of History and Bernheim's Lehrbuch as specific, titled works in the same sentence, not a vague gesture at "historical method in general." It resolves, for Kent's own 1941 text, the half of question-verify-kent-writing-history-cites-historical-criticism-tradition asking whether he names this tradition at all.
