External criticism / internal criticism
The twofold division of historical-document evaluation formalized by Charles-Victor Langlois and Charles Seignobos in their 1898 Introduction to the Study of History: External Criticism judges whether a document is what it claims to be — its writing, language, form, and transmission — while Internal Criticism judges whether what the document says is credible. Matters to this vault as the oldest documented instance of the same source-reliability-apart-from-content-credibility split that five later fields independently re-derive, and as the named category that places Mabillon's diplomatics specifically on the authenticity/External-Criticism side of that split.

Updates
- 2026-10-03: the 1898 text's own verbatim definition of "Diplomatic" (pp. 49–50) — classing it among the auxiliary sciences that feed External Criticism — is now a promoted claim-note, so the diplomatics-on-the-authenticity-axis placement no longer rests on structural inference alone. (claim-langlois-seignobos-1898-class-diplomatic-as-auxiliary-science-of-external-criticism)
- 2026-10-03: the External-Criticism-only character of diplomatics is now read as the opposite prescription to the two-axis fields' leak — diplomatics discards the reliability axis as its founding fix, where intelligence doctrine and RAG cannot keep it from leaking (observation-diplomatics-and-two-axis-model-opposite-prescriptions-on-reliability)
- 2026-10-06: Sherman Kent's own 1941 Writing History — read directly for the first time — names both halves of this concept's founding pair: it cites Langlois and Seignobos by title in its own bibliographical note, and separately builds its Chapter I's working vocabulary of historical criticism directly on Bernheim's named four-step schema (Heuristik/Kritik/Auffassung/Darstellung) that Langlois-Seignobos's own text dates itself against. This is the first documented case of a named individual in this concept's lineage explicitly citing the tradition, rather than a structurally-matching independent convergence.
