"Systems science and China's economic reforms" (Song Jian, 1986 conference essay)

Song Jian's own 1986 conference essay — "Systems science and China's economic reforms," in Yang Jiachi (ed.), Control Science and Technology for Development (CSTD '85), Oxford: Pergamon, 1986, pp. 1–8 — is his first-person retrospective account of encountering European systems-analysis methods applied to population problems, on "a visit to Europe in 1978." No vault session has read the essay directly; every citation on file runs through Susan Greenhalgh's quotation of pp. 2–3 in her 2003 and 2005 articles.

Matters to this vault as the single most load-bearing unread primary in its Olsder/Song 1975-vs-1978 dating dispute: Song's own words, quoted at one remove, are the strongest documentary evidence against Olsder's 1975 Twente-conversation account, and the essay has now anchored two independent bridge-check sessions (2026-08-30, 2026-09-03) without anyone reading past Greenhalgh's block quote. • 2026-09-03: A bridge-check session sequences this essay's public footprint against the other side of the dating dispute: Greenhalgh's 2003 article quoting it predates the book that triggered Olsder's account (2008) by five years, and predates the account itself (2024) by twenty-one.
