Theodore A. Postol
MIT physicist (Program in Science, Technology, and Society) known for applying first-principles physics analysis to publicly contest official U.S. military performance claims, without relying on classified data. He matters to this vault as the earlier half of a methodological lineage it tracks explicitly: his and George N. Lewis's 1991–93 frame-by-frame analysis of news-camera footage of Patriot–Scud intercepts found no unambiguous evidence Patriot destroyed even one Scud warhead — the first public, non-classified challenge to the Army's wartime Gulf War success claims, and one both a 1992 House subcommittee hearing and GAO's own NSIAD-92-340 review followed. Postol's Congressional testimony in the same hearing also gave a load-bearing miss-distance mechanism (a Patriot detonating within 5–10 meters of a target for a reasonable kill probability) not yet independently sourced in the vault. The same public-data-plus-physics method he pioneered on Patriot is the explicit parallel the vault draws to MIT's later open-source critique of a classified Russian weapon's claims (Burevestnik).
