MIT researchers used publicly available data and first-principles physics to contest official military claims in both the 1991 Patriot debate and the 2026 Burevestnik reconstruction

Two MIT analyses, separated by 35 years, share an observable structure. In 1991–93, George N. Lewis and Theodore A. The common features are concrete rather than rhetorical: both are the work of MIT-affiliated physicists; both take publicly obtainable data (news video; MoD videos, photographs, satellite imagery) as the evidence base rather than classified assessments; both apply first-principles physics (intercept geometry; the physics of air-breathing nuclear propulsion) to a claim made or controlled by a military establishment; and in both cases the analysis narrows or contradicts what an official source asserts — the U.S. Army's success rate in one, Russia's secrecy around a weapon's design in the other.

The two cases also differ in a way worth marking: the Patriot work refuted an official claim of success, while the Burevestnik work reconstructs a claim the originating state has kept secret.
