Vladimir Sergeevich Lukyanov
Soviet railway and hydraulic engineer (1902–1980) who, starting from a practical problem in concrete-crack prediction he encountered as a young engineer, built the first known machine for solving partial differential equations by letting water flow through interconnected chambers — a room-sized analog computer completed in 1936. He is the anchor of this vault's hydraulic- analog-computing cluster: one half of a convergent-invention pair with the later British MONIAC (see claim-hydraulic-analog-computers-independently-invented-economics-engineering), and — per a 2026-08-18 Tier 2 source — a direct intellectual heir of A. N. Krylov's earlier mechanical integrator and N. N. Pavlovsky's 1918 "principle of analogy." Namesake trap: an unrelated Russian architect (b. 1945) shares the English Wikipedia page title "Vladimir Lukyanov" — do not conflate.
