Vladimir Lukyanov's 1936 Water Integrator solved differential equations with interconnected water-filled pipes
The Soviet engineer [[entity-vladimir-lukyanov|Vladimir Sergeevich Lukyanov]] built a Water Integrator in 1936 — a room-sized hydraulic analog computer in which water levels in interconnected chambers stood for the values of variables, and the flow of water between chambers physically integrated the governing equations. Unlike the later British MONIAC, which modeled money flows, Lukyanov's machine was a general differential-equation solver: he built it to compute the temperature and cracking behaviour of setting concrete in large structures, a partial differential equation problem that had no practical numerical method at the time. He drew directly on A. N. Krylov's earlier (~1910) mechanical analog integrator and N. N. Pavlovsky's 1918 "principle of analogy" — that two physical processes governed by the same equation can model one another.
The integrators were later exported to China, Poland, Bulgaria, and Czechoslovakia, and remained in official use into the 1980s, with digital computers finally superseding them in the early 1980s. These facts, along with the 1936 date and the concrete-crack motivation above, are now corroborated by a named-author, institutionally-anchored Tier 2 source (a Polytechnic Museum researcher's 2000 magazine account) independent of the Tier-4 Wikipedia article originally cited, plus a second, independent Tier-4 source (a distinct Russian Wikipedia biographical article).
