Blind mathematicians' working methods and private notations

A cluster tracing how mathematicians who worked without sight improvised their own means of doing mathematics — and what does and doesn't transmit between them. The organizing observation is that each seems to have reinvented a personal system rather than inheriting one, though this holds more cleanly for notation than for method.

The cases, by modality

• Memory / dictation — claim-euler-produced-large-share-of-output-after-going-blind (Euler; exact post-blindness fraction unsettled, [unverified-quant]). 2026-08-01 follow-up found the "half" figure's textual origin (claim-euler-half-output-figure-traces-to-1883-rudio-lecture), an unsettled denominator across four disagreeing source totals (claim-eulers-total-work-count-unsettled-across-sources), and that two "seven years" figures cited for Euler's late output describe different spans (claim-euler-seven-years-figures-describe-different-windows) — none of which resolves the core fraction, all of which sharpen why it's still open.

Sound — sonification of mathematics

The digital-era leg: rendering an equation's spatial structure into non-speech audio.

General theory (non-blindness-specific)

A 2026-09-08 return pass found a general, non-blindness-specific theory of how notations spread — worth recording as a candidate mechanism, not a confirmed account of the blind-mathematician cases specifically:

Audit / status history

• 2026-09-24 (propagation-repair): the "General theory" section's provenance line was was: "All three rest on one not-yet-independently-corroborated 2026 paper ... whose own URL wasn't captured" — now: that flag is discharged. The paper was located and read directly (arXiv:2602.01525v1 [cs.HC], 2 Feb 2026, https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.01525, PDF sha256 a9afa309d7ee9a9411ea595e955eb08004c24b745bf9ae3d02901868ab1a5253, verified TLS) in the 2026-09-10 cross-model audits and re-confirmed by an independent 2026-09-11 fetch, with all three quotes verbatim and URL, venue and sha recorded. What survives is narrower and still carried on the page: the single-source concentration (exactly three claim-notes, at the cap) and the unresolved venue status. The "Open questions" pointer to question-verify-zhang-2026-how-notations-evolve-primary-source was narrowed the same way, from "recover the URL/DOI ... and confirm its quotes verbatim" to the venue thread alone.
