Clark's 2016 essay narrates Song Jian's 1978 Helsinki encounter with Dutch population-cybernetics work in decisive-causal terms: "To Song, the equations in the Dutch paper offered power—power over what his leaders had defined as a population problem, and power for his hard science to prove it was superior to the soft social sciences." Separately, in the essay's concluding section some six or seven paragraphs later, the transmission is stated outright: "Dutch ideas that no one could have put into practice in Amsterdam were actually carried out in Beijing, where there could be no resistance."
Geert Jan Olsder's own account, published in U-Today in June 2024 — eight and a half years after Clark's essay — declines that framing for his own work. The decline rests on two spans that are Olsder's own words rather than his interviewer's narration, a distinction the 2026-08-17 audit of that companion note established: "The fact that my work was the first domino depends on coincidences, even though the encounter had far-reaching consequences," and "Perhaps in a slightly different way, or at a different time, but the policy had been introduced. Concerns about China's rapid population growth were not new in 1975." The first sentence alone concedes consequence and only relocates it to chance; it is the second that supplies the counterfactual — the policy would have arrived without him — and so carries the contrast with Clark.
Because Clark's essay predates the U-Today interview by more than eight years, this cannot be a citation relationship in either direction: Clark could not have read words Olsder had not yet spoken, and Olsder's account nowhere mentions Clark's essay. The connection is convergence, not transmission — two independently authored texts, separated by eight and a half years, take opposite positions on whether the Dutch mathematical model was decisive, and the identification in claim-clark-2016-dutch-authors-identifiable-as-olsder-and-strijbos means the person actually named in the technical record is the same one who, when finally asked directly, declined the causal weight Clark's essay had already assigned him without asking.
