The bipartite pairing of Song Jian's self-credit and Olsder's 1975 first-contact account reads, at a glance, as two matching instances of a subject retrospectively claiming credit for triggering China's one-child policy. A direct comparison of what each man actually says shows the opposite posture. Song Jian's own 1995 account, as translated by Susan Greenhalgh, casts his 1980 projections as decisive and sufficient cause: "[our 1980 projections] shocked the scientific circles and politicians, [leading the government to] follow a policy of 'one child system.'" Geert Jan Olsder, describing his own 1975 conversation that (on his account) first interested Song in population cybernetics, explicitly declines the equivalent framing: "The fact that my work was the first domino depends on coincidences, even though the encounter had far-reaching consequences." The interviewer adds, in his own narration rather than in quotation, that "[t]he mathematician is convinced that the policy would have been implemented even if he hadn't told Jian about his publication" — a characterization, not Olsder's words.
