Huibert Kwakernaak founded the University of Twente's Systems and Control research group in 1970

A 2025 obituary published by University of Twente colleagues states that Huibert Kwakernaak moved from Delft to Twente in 1970 and there founded the research group Systems and Control — the group that, per the same source, later grew "to the point that it belonged to the top of the world in Systems and Control" and survives today as MAST (Mathematics of Systems Theory).

This resolves a gap the vault had already flagged on Kwakernaak's own entity page: prior sessions knew him only as the author of a 1977 paper on population-control mathematics that fed into Song Jian's work behind China's one-child policy, with no record of his standing within control theory itself. The founding-director role establishes that Kwakernaak was not a peripheral figure borrowed for one population-policy application, but the institutional center of a leading Dutch control-theory group from the outset of the decade in which his population-policy paper and Olsder and Strijbos's 1976 paper were both produced.

The same sentence names Strijbos as arriving with Kwakernaak that year — recorded separately as claim-strijbos-arrived-twente-with-kwakernaak-1970, since the identification of "Rens Strijbos" with the vault's R.C.W. Strijbos carries its own unresolved flag.
