The concept of multiple discovery was itself independently discovered many times — Merton's thesis instantiates its own content
The idea that scientific discoveries are characteristically multiple — reached independently by several people — is itself a textbook multiple. On the standard account, Merton was not the first to state it; the concept had a long line of independent predecessors (reported as 18-plus), among them Macaulay (1828), Galton (1869), Duhem, and Ogburn & Thomas (1922), each arriving at the "multiples are common" observation without building on the others. The thesis thus exemplifies its own content: an idea whose truth is demonstrated by the history of the idea.
This is a distinct instance of a self-referential pattern the vault is accumulating in the sociology of scientific credit. Its closest cousin is Stigler's Law and the Matthew Effect being themselves misattributed — where the labels for misassigned credit are cases of misassigned credit; here it is the concept of multiple discovery that is a multiple. Both belong with Merton's dominant-pattern thesis and are enacted concretely by the five-fold independent discovery of the reverse mode, which the vault has now caught recurring often enough that the recurrence is itself the finding.
