Seymour Papert co-authored Perceptrons (1969) with Minsky after training under Piaget in Geneva

Seymour Papert (1928–2016) is best known inside AI history as Marvin Minsky's co-author on Perceptrons (MIT Press, 1969) — the book at the center of the vault's AI-winter-myth cluster (myth-perceptrons-book-killed-connectionism, claim-perceptrons-multilayer-sterile-was-conjecture) — and as his co-director of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. What is less often noted is that Papert's formation was not in symbolic logic but in developmental psychology. Before MIT he spent roughly 1958–1963 in Geneva working alongside Jean Piaget, whose account of how children construct knowledge, per the MIT obituary, "changed Papert's view of children and learning." Piaget reportedly said no one understood his ideas as well as Papert.

This makes Papert a cross-domain figure: one of the two authors whose 1969 book is popularly blamed for constraining machine learning arrived at that work having already absorbed a theory of human learning grounded in construction and experience rather than hand-coded rules. The grounding is the root of his later career in claim-papert-constructionism-inverts-instructionism and the Logo programming language, and it reframes the Perceptrons co-authorship: the biographical record does not support reading Papert as a pure symbolic-AI partisan.
