Independent of Novikov, Olli Lehto's official IMU history Mathematics Without Borders — read directly (2026-08-25, via the IMU's own hosted copy) after first reaching this vault through a 2020 MacTutor History of Mathematics article — places Pontryagin at a different event entirely: the joint luncheon of the IMU Executive Committee's meeting in Paris in May 1978, where, as an Executive Committee member (1971–1978), he objected to Margulis's medal. Lehto's own account, in indirect discourse rather than a direct quotation, reports that Pontryagin "was furious about this choice" and "let it be understood that it was a shame for the Union and for the Fields Medal Committee to have selected as a winner a second-rate mathematician like Margulis" — Lehto's characterization of Pontryagin's position, not a transcription of Pontryagin's own words. K. Chandrasekharan rebutted him at the same luncheon; Lehto summarizes, again in indirect discourse, "the essence of what Chandrasekharan said was that while it might not be absolutely certain that the Committee had found the four most deserving medalists, it was absolutely certain that the mathematics of all those selected was of the highest quality and deserved profound admiration" (Chandrasekharan's precise 1978 title is itself unconfirmed — see question-verify-chandrasekharan-title-1978-paris-imu-executive-committee).

This independently confirms Pontryagin's personal antagonism toward Margulis's selection — but at the international level, over the medal itself, not the domestic Soviet National Committee level, over Margulis's travel, which is the specific mechanism the existing claim-note describes. The two are compatible (a man furious enough to argue against a medal in Paris is a plausible participant in a domestic vote against the winner's travel) but they are not the same event, and no source found independently confirms the domestic vote itself. The same MacTutor/Lehto source separately confirms the Soviet National Committee was real and powerful over travel and delegations, and that Pontryagin, with Ivan Vinogradov, "led... the effort... to gain control over the choice of all Russian lecturers and medal winners at the International Congress of Mathematicians" — but stops short of placing him in the specific 24:0 vote.

• 2026-08-25 — Lehto's book was read directly for the first time (IMU's own hosted PDF, sha256 4aaed130c5195c493c9d16a19ec012499d39b7a930aefacfa2d3ab261ee0e6b5). The quote holds word-for-word against the MacTutor rendering, so source_tier moves from 3 to 1 and source_url/source_author now cite Lehto directly rather than the MacTutor secondary. The direct read also dates the luncheon precisely to May 1978 (this note previously said "spring 1978") and shows the passage is written as Lehto's own indirect- discourse summary of Pontryagin's position — no quotation marks in the original — not a verbatim quotation of Pontryagin's own words; the body above is corrected to reflect that distinction, which the earlier two-layers-removed reading could not establish.
