Luigi Trastulli was a steelworker in Terni, Italy, killed in 1949 during a protest against the Atlantic Pact (NATO). In his study The Death of Luigi Trastulli, the oral historian Alessandro Portelli documented that many Terni workers' oral accounts relocated the death to 1953 — the year of mass layoffs at the Terni steelworks. The displaced date "fit" the emotional logic of the community's history (a year of collective defeat) better than the year the killing actually occurred.

Portelli's methodological move was to treat the factual error not as noise to be corrected but as evidence in its own right: the drift reveals what the event meant to those who remembered it. As reproduced by the cited encyclopedia entry, he framed his interest as narratives "that were not factually true because it's one of the ways through which you can get at the meaning and the subjectivity as well as the facts of what actually happened."

This inverts the usual reliability contest between testimony and documents — rather than asking which is more trustworthy, Portelli's approach reads the gap between them as the datum.
