The actuarial framing is contemporaneous with the papers themselves, not a later gloss — "graduation" appears in Part A's own title as a direct synonym for "smoothing," and both papers explicitly credit a named actuarial literature (W. A. Jenkins 1926, T. N. E. Greville 1944) as direct predecessors. The institutional origin, however, is documented. Per MacTutor: "During the years 1943–45 he was released from the University of Pennsylvania for war work as a mathematician at the Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory in Aberdeen, Maryland (the Aberdeen Proving Ground). It was during this war work that he initiated the area for which he is most famous, the theory of splines." Spline theory was born in an artillery-mathematics lab, not an insurance office.
The same lab is the institutional birthplace of general-purpose computing. Per the US Army's own ENIAC history (https://ftp.arl.army.mil/~mike/comphist/eniac-story.html, Tier 2): "The world's first electronic digital computer was developed by Army Ordnance to compute World War II ballistic firing tables," a responsibility "carried out at the Ballistic Research Laboratory of the Ordnance Department at Aberdeen." ENIAC — built to replace human ballistics "computers" — was moved to BRL Aberdeen in 1947 and operated there until 1955.
Precision, 2026-09-12 (cross-model audit): the same Army page (Martin H. Weik, "The ENIAC Story," 1961) is explicit that the machine was physically built elsewhere. "The original agreement between the United States of America and the trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, dated June 5, 1943, called for six months of 'research and development of an electronic numerical integrator and computer and delivery of a report thereon'"; "The ENIAC was placed in operation at the Moore School, component by component, beginning with the cycling unit and an accumulator in June 1944"; it "was formally dedicated at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering of the University of Pennsylvania on February 15, 1946," accepted by Army Ordnance that July, and "the first units arrived at Aberdeen Proving Ground in January 1947." BRL was therefore ENIAC's sponsoring institution and, from 1947, its operator — the "built" in this note's title should be read as commissioned and later housed. The coincidence is, if anything, tighter than the title states: Schoenberg was released from the University of Pennsylvania — where ENIAC was being assembled — to the laboratory that had ordered it.
So the curve math under digital typography (claim-spline-was-a-shipbuilders-lofting-tool-before-a-math-object, claim-bezier-de-casteljau-independent-invention-secrecy-named-the-curve) and the literal birthplace of the electronic computer share an address.
