James Dodson designed the first age-scaled life-assurance premiums, the basis of the Society for Equitable Assurances (Equitable Life, founded 1762)
James Dodson (c. 1705–1757), building on Edmond Halley's 1693 Breslau mortality table, designed what is generally described as the first life-assurance scheme with premiums correctly scaled to the insured's age. He presented the method in a 1756 lecture. Dodson died in 1757 before the scheme could be established; the plan was completed and the Society for Equitable Assurances on Lives and Survivorship — Equitable Life — was founded in 1762 by a group including Edward Rowe Mores. (Corrected at audit 2026-07-12: the society was constituted by deed of trust in September 1762, not by royal charter — the capture's "chartered" is not what the sources say.) The age-graded premium became the foundation of modern actuarial pricing.
The system Dodson's premiums were built to correct was the pooled model of the
Amicable Society, which had rejected him (see
claim-dodson-refused-amicable-society-over-age-45).
The Amicable admitted members within a coarse age band without individually
rating their risk, charged every admitted member the same flat contribution
(claim-amicable-society-1706-charged-flat-premium-not-graded-by-age), and
divided a fixed, pre-set annual fund equally among that year's death-claims
(claim-amicable-society-1706-fixed-dividend-fund-divided-equally-per-death) —
so a nominee's payout turned on how many other members happened to die that year.
(Corrected 2026-07-26: this paragraph previously said the fund was split "among
the survivors" and carried an [unverified-mechanism] flag. Both are resolved by
the direct read of Walford 1885 — the recipients are the nominees of the deceased,
not survivors, and the rule is equal division per claim. The flag is discharged
and the routing question question-verify-amicable-society-pricing-model-charter
was retired to _answered/ on 2026-07-23.)
Halley's 1693 table supplied the empirical survivorship data the age-scaling needed; note that the vault's existing Halley notes cover a different Halley contribution — the 1716 transit-of-Venus parallax method (claim-halley-1716-transit-of-venus-parallax-method) — not the mortality table, which remains unpromoted here (it is the companion capture's territory). On why the two Halley contributions are one bridge, not a coincidence — and how Halley himself computed age-scaled annuity prices in 1693 that the government then ignored — see 2026-07-11-hop-halley-two-fields-one-ancestor, which connects this note to claim-scharf-2007-names-halley-transit-venus-as-exoplanet-transit-parallax-ancestor.
The causal claim that Dodson built this scheme "in direct response" to his own
exclusion is the interesting spine of the story, and it is reported tradition
rather than documented fact — resolved 2026-07-26. The Oxford Dictionary of
National Biography carries the causation but explicitly hedges it ("It was said
that he was denied admission ... and that this led him to advertise"), gives no
source for it, and lists Ogborn 1962 as its own first source; the Journal of the
Institute of Actuaries review of Ogborn explains Dodson's motivation as vision
and mathematical capability without mentioning the Amicable at all. See
claim-dodson-rejection-causation-is-reported-tradition-not-documented. The
[unverified-causal] flag is discharged in favour of that finding: the sequence
is well attested, the causal link is repeated rather than evidenced, and this
note now states it that way. The
exclusion-then-rebuild shape connects to the vault's
claim-saunderson-palpable-arithmetic-tactile-calculating-device cluster and
