Extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) lithography is the tool that patterns nearly every advanced logic chip, including AI accelerators, and each EUV scanner is built by ASML around a mirror/projection-optics system supplied by a single firm: Carl Zeiss SMT, a division of the foundation-owned Zeiss group (see claim-carl-zeiss-foundation-paired-employee-ownership-with-early-labor-reforms). Zeiss states that "80 percent of all microchips worldwide are manufactured with optics from ZEISS and the lithography systems of its strategic partner ASML," and its EUV mirrors are described as the most accurate in the world — a surface whose unevenness, scaled to the size of Germany, would be a tenth of a millimetre. ASML's own EUV output is reported to be gated by Zeiss's optics capacity.
Corroboration from the customer's side (2026-09-12 audit). The Zeiss page above never says "sole"; it is ASML that says it, in its own SEC filings. ASML's Form 20-F for 2010: "Zeiss is our sole external supplier of main optical systems and one of the suppliers of other components"; "The number of lithography systems we are able to produce is limited by the production capacity of Carl Zeiss SMT AG"; and "If Zeiss were to terminate its relationship with us or if Zeiss were unable to produce lenses and optical components over a prolonged period, we would effectively cease to be able to conduct our business." The 2012 filing repeats it as "Zeiss is our single supplier of lenses and other critical optical components." These statements cover all of ASML's lithography optics, not EUV alone, and predate EUV volume production — the exclusivity is structural and older than EUV, which is a stronger claim than the title makes. What they do not touch is the "80 percent" figure, which stays flagged below.
The structural consequence is a single point of failure: a scarce upstream supplier whose output ceiling constrains an entire downstream industry.
