Andrei Sakharov

Soviet nuclear physicist (a lead designer of the Soviet hydrogen bomb) who became one of the Soviet Union's most prominent human-rights dissidents, awarded the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize; barred from leaving the USSR to accept it, his wife Yelena Bonner received the prize in his place.
