Liu Xiaobo

Chinese literary critic, writer, and human-rights activist; principal author of Charter 08, the December 2008 human-rights and political-reform manifesto modelled on Czechoslovakia's Charter 77, and the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, an award he received while imprisoned.

Matters to this vault as the author of the document Woeser signed as (per a contemporaneous count) its only Tibetan among 300-plus initial signatories, and as a name on A.E. • 2026-08-29: the Norwegian Nobel Committee's own 2017 statement on his death named him in a "heritage of former Nobel laureates" running back to Carl von Ossietzky (1935) and Andrei Sakharov (1975) — the Committee's own comparison, not an outside analyst's. His 2010 empty-chair ceremony was only the second in Peace Prize history, the first being Ossietzky's in 1936, and he is the first Peace laureate to die in state custody since Ossietzky.
